48034 read it

To get rid of pests, pathogens of various diseases, all kinds of animals and mold, gardeners can use chemicals to treat greenhouses. Often, when choosing a chemical preparation, the choice falls on the sulfur block, as it is inexpensive and easy to use.

But few people read the instructions for use before using it or ask themselves: «Is it possible to use it in a metal greenhouse covered with polycarbonate?» Answer: «Not recommended, as the greenhouse may be damaged»

Why? Let's take a look at the sulfur checker application guide.

«To avoid corrosion, lubricate metal objects with a thick layer of grease or grease» We recall chemistry lessons. The combustion product of a sulfur bomb is gaseous sulfur dioxide (S + O2 → SO2; 2SO2 + O2 → 2SO3). And it, combining with water vapor or condensate in the greenhouse, forms sulfuric acid (SO3 + H2O → H2SO4), which interacts with metal (including galvanized), forming rust.

Thus, after using a sulfur block, the greenhouse frame may become rusty, and the polycarbonate may become cloudy. This will cause some damage to the greenhouse.

It is worth noting that you need to be careful when using a sulfur checker. The sulfurous anhydride released during the burning of the bomb is toxic and, if inhaled, can cause severe poisoning and burns of the respiratory tract. Therefore, precautions must be taken. When using, wear a respirator mask and safety glasses.

To get rid of pests and diseases, if they really exist, it is possible and necessary in other ways.

In the process of caring for the greenhouse, it is strictly forbidden to use: solvents, degreasers, detergents and cleaners. It is permissible to wipe the greenhouse only with high shaking.

The step of arcs in a polycarbonate greenhouse is 0.65 or 1 meter - which one to choose?

The step of arcs in a polycarbonate greenhouse is 0.65 or 1 meter - which one to choose?

The strength and durability of the greenhouse depends on several factors, including the distance between the arcs (racks) of the frame. This distance is called the "arc step". Ceteris paribus, the more often the arcs are located near the frame, the more reliable it is and, accordingly, a polycarbonate greenhouse with such a frame will withstand a large snow and wind load. From our experience, we know that the optimal distance between the arcs for a polycarbonate greenhouse is a step of 0.65 m.

Berries in a greenhouse

Berries in a greenhouse

We are used to the fact that cucumbers, tomatoes or peppers are most often grown in a greenhouse. But what if we plant berries instead of the vegetables we are used to? Thanks to the greenhouse, favorable conditions are created for the growth of plants and the ripening of fruits. The greenhouse protects from bird raids, from frost and sudden changes in temperature, from strong winds and other adverse weather events. Moreover, it becomes easier to take care of the berries than in open beds. For example, in the north, in the Vologda Oblast, we managed to harvest strawberries 1 month earlier in the greenhouse than in the open field. We harvested the first crop in May.

Shelves and hanging table in the greenhouse

In our experience, we see that many people consider the greenhouse as a place intended exclusively for growing plants and try to occupy all the space for planting by making uncomfortable small narrow passages between the beds, least of all thinking about how to be and work in the greenhouse themselves was convenient and comfortable . We will write an article about the placement of beds a little later, but for now, about how, in the process of working in a greenhouse, sometimes there is not enough shelf where you can put garden tools, gloves, fertilizers, etc.
